The Shepherd and You

Evelyn Roberts

Psalm 23 says that the Lord is our Shepherd. A shepherd is one who guides and leads. Sheep need a shepherd. One reason is that sheep follow their noses. They put their heads down and start grazing, and they have such a poor sense of direction that they will graze right over a cliff if the shepherd doesn’t watch them.

If a sheep strays, it’s in danger, and the shepherd has to find it and restore it to the flock. We, too, are like sheep. We may go wandering off, but our Shepherd leaves the rest of the flock to search for us and bring us back to the fold safely.

I’m told that when a shepherd in Israel takes his sheep from one pasture to another, he uses his rod to beat off snakes, wild animals, or anything that endangers his sheep. This is exactly what the Lord, our Shepherd, does for us. He is our Protector, and He beats off any evil that comes against us as we trust in Him. Psalm 23:4 says, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Verse 5 says the Shepherd anoints our head with oil. To me, that symbolizes the Holy Spirit. I’m told that sheep get extremely hot, and briars scratch their faces. At day’s end, the shepherd takes a vial of oil and pours it on the heads of the sheep and into their wounds. The soothing oil helps to heal them. The Holy Spirit does the same for us. When we’re in a tangle with our adversaries and problems, the Lord anoints us with His Holy Spirit.

Psalm 23:6 says, Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. This verse reminds us that our Shepherd is pouring out His goodness upon us, and He is with us always!

PUNCTUALITY

adapted from the Leadership Files
Quote - 'Make your now wow!' - Mark Victor Hansen

Hi, I'm Phil Pringle
You're going to love this;

If you're always early you're never late!

Time is more valuable than money.

People pay money to save time.

When we're late we steal time from others and ourselves.

Tardiness is the tap-root of a host of character faults.

My lateness says 'I don't care about you; I'm more important than you; you can wait for me; I'm disorganised; I'm undisciplined.'

It's not so much about time management but about managing ourselves.

Love others. Be on time. Even early! From now on.

Stepping out with you,

oh alrights... i promise to try to be early kays? =)

change takes time... =)

  • Four motions per category will be given (refer below). Teams will not know what motion they'll be doing, or what side of the house they will get until the Qualifying Round itself.
  • Teams will have 45 minutes to prepare for the debate.
  • Each speaker can speak for 3 minutes.
  • The timekeeper would ring the buzzer at the 2nd minute and when the time limit is up. When the speaker has exceeded the time limit by 15 seconds, the timekeeper would ring the bell continuously.
  • There will be no reply speech or points-of-information during the qualifying round.
  • 4 teams with the most number of points would qualify for the Semifinals. If more than 4 teams tie for number of points, the teams with higher scores would qualify.

  • The motion and side will be released to teams on week before the actual debate.
  • Each speaker will get 6 minutes to speak.
  • Points-of-Information may be offered by teams during the speeches of their opponents, between the 1st and the last minute(6th minute).
  • After the 3rd speaker from the opposition team has delivered his/her speech, there will be a 1-minute adjournment where all members may help the reply speaker with his/her speech.
  • A 3-minute closing summative speech (reply speech) will be delivered by either the 1st or the 2dn speaker of each team. No new materials (rebuttals, points) may be included. Speaker from the opposition team will deliver the speech first, followed by the proposition team.
